Welcome to the Diocese of St. Albans

Mothers’ Union (MU) website

As you browse through our website we hope you will find plenty of information about MU in the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire area.

We are part of the worldwide organisation which has 4 million members in 84 countries worldwide and we aim to demonstrate the Christian faith in action by the transformation of communities through the nurture of family in its many forms.

MU was set up by Mary Sumner in 1876 when she saw that young mothers needed help to bring up their children in the love of God.

Today, we continue to promote and support marriage and encourage parents in their role to develop the faith of their children.  Through prayer, programmes, policy work and practical action we hope to promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.  We also support families when times are difficult too.

Membership of MU is open to all (men, women, single, married, widowed or divorced), who agree with our Aims and Objectives and have been baptised into any Christian denomination. Friends of MU are ‘Friend Members’ believing in our Aims and Objectives and wishing to be part of our amazing organisation.

Members work at the grassroots level in hundreds of projects that meet local, national and international needs.

“What does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Micah 6:8
